HARBOUR CHRONICLES–A Life in Surfboard Culture
Tuesday, February 16th, 2010When I think of Seal Beach a few things come to mind… Grandma’s Ice Cream Shop (which is no longer around), Walt’s Warf, the Red Car, The Bay Theater and Harbour Surfboards. Growing up in Seal Beach I spent many days hanging out on Main St enjoying all it had to offer. It is a neat little town…I am proud to call it my hometown. There is a real sense of community there, something you don’t always find these days. Harbour Surfboards is a big part of Seal Beach’s history. Rich Harbour has contributed considerably to the surf culture and lifestyle, it is nice to see this Seal Beach legend being honored.
An exhibit opens February 13 and runs until April 9 at the Frank M. Doyle Art Pavilion on the Orange Coast College campus, 2701 Fairview Road. Costa Mesa. Exhibit hours are 11am to 5pm Tuesdays -Fridays and 5-8pm on Wednesdays. The exhibition will be one of the most ambitious presentations of surf culture ever mounted, featuring more than 40 significant surfboards and a myriad of vintage images and objects including rare photographs, vintage clothing and many of Harbour’s original shaping tools. A full color, 144 page, hard cover book will be released during the run of the exhibition and available at the Arts Pavilion Gallery Store. If you are in the OC area I suggest you check it out… I can’t wait to go myself.

I was good friends with Rich’s daughter while I was growing up and spent a lot of time with this great family. It is really nice to see Rich being recognized for his contribution to surf culture.
Note: I am terribly behind on my blogging… I will try to get caught up soon. I have been busy working on some behind the scenes projects, which I plan to share with you soon. Until then, thanks for stopping by.
